At the end of the first day of free practice for the Spanish Grand Prix at the Jerez circuit today, Cal Crutchlow remained positive with the work he and the LCR Honda Team had done in trying to find a set-up to suit
his riding style. The British rider set the 13th fastest time of the day, but more unable to improve his time at the end of the afternoon practice, Cal was confident of getting amongst the top
ten in tomorrow’s morning practice to ensure a place in the qualifying final, and from importantly
worked tirelessly with his crew on changing the bike
’s settings and using a variety of tyre combinations to offer him a much better feeling with the factory
spec Honda RC213V. Although he was there a good grid position.

“In the second free practice I actually felt quite good at the start, then we went with a different bike
halfway through and I had a bad feeling. That was the one with this year’s settings on, and I felt much better with the other bike which had last year’s settings. Later I put a new soft tyre in for the first time to see how it was, but it didn’t seem to work for me as it spun up a lot. I think I could have gone quicker with the harder option if I’d have stayed on it – that’s what seemed to happen with others who stayed out on them. I felt we had quite a good pace earlier on though, and I know where I can improve. We know we should actually be way inside the top
ten, but it’s just one of those things. We got through the work we wanted to get through today, tested a variety of settings and all the tyre allocations, so we are happy with that. We’re happier with what we have now, and I think we’ve found something that may suit
me a bit more. The main thing is we have to continue to put in the hard work.”
